Abstract

Jivavarta is a narrative-based system that turns stories, novels, and poems into principles and concepts for understanding the world, and then examines those concepts through observation and application. 

By formalizing a new narrative-to-concept methodology, Jivavarta bridges fiction and systems thinking to analyze how human agency operates within complex systems and how the consequences of action can alter the conditions of subsequent action. To develop this framework, the paper advances two connected questions: What can a person actually do inside a system? and What can a choice change? The first question is examined through the heuristic:

Outcome=Choice×Structure×Constraint

which functions as an analytical device rather than a predictive mathematical model, capturing the dynamic interaction among individual choice, surrounding structures, and physical or social constraints. The paper then develops the movement from constrained agency to transformative agency, showing how the outcome of a choice can become part of the conditions governing later choices across time. Jivavarta's primary methodological contribution is its structural pipeline:

Together, these elements establish Jivavarta as a distinct framework for tracing the reciprocal relationship between agency and systems: systems shape what agents can do, while the consequences of action can reshape the conditions under which subsequent action becomes possible.

1. Introduction

No complex society can be understood through a single lens.
General Systems Theory draws attention to relationships within a whole. Cybernetics examines feedback, communication, and regulation. Systemic Functional Linguistics examines how language operates within social context. Historical Materialism directs attention toward material conditions, production, and social relations.
Jivavarta begins somewhere slightly different.
It asks:
What happens to the individual who must make choices inside such a system?
This question lies at the center of the Jivavarta framework.
Its operational heuristic is:
OUTCOME = CHOICE × STRUCTURE × CONSTRAINT
The equation is not intended as a predictive mathematical formula. The multiplication sign is heuristic: it denotes interaction among the three variables rather than numerical multiplication.
Choice is the decision an individual or group makes.
Structure is the system of institutions, rules, relationships, resources, and norms that organises the space of possible action.
Constraint defines the limits within that space—scarcity, law, circumstance, physical conditions, social expectations, knowledge, or other factors that restrict what can actually be exercised.
A person may have a formal choice but lack the resources to exercise it.
An institution may permit dissent in principle while making dissent prohibitively costly in practice.
The question is therefore not simply:
What choice was available?
It is:
What choice was actually possible?

2. From the System to the Person Inside It
Systems theories often begin with relationships, processes, structures, or patterns.
Jivavarta retains that systemic perspective but places the individual agent inside the picture.
The person is neither completely autonomous nor merely a product of circumstance.
An individual acts.
The system responds.
That response changes the conditions under which the next choice is made.
A decision can therefore become part of the conditions that shape subsequent decisions.
This introduces an essential dimension of systems thinking:
Time.
Today's outcome can become tomorrow's condition.
Choices shape institutions, institutions shape future choices, and those choices produce new outcomes.
The system is therefore not a static relationship between Choice, Structure, and Constraint; it is a continuing process.

3. The Agency–Structure Problem
Jivavarta enters a question that social theory has explored for decades: the relationship between human agency and social structure.
Anthony Giddens (1984), through Structuration Theory, examined how social structures are both conditions of action and reproduced through action.
Margaret Archer (1988) likewise examined relationships among structure, culture, and agency across time through her morphogenetic approach.
Jivavarta does not claim to replace either framework.
Its emphasis is different.
It proposes a particular way of examining and communicating the relationship between agency and structure through narrative.
Its operational frame is:
OUTCOME = CHOICE × STRUCTURE × CONSTRAINT
Place an individual inside a particular world.
What choices remain?
What does the structure permit?
What do the constraints prevent?
What resources are available?
And what happens when the outcome of a choice changes the conditions in which the next choice will be made?
This shifts attention toward the agent's field of possible action.

4. What Jivavarta Is—and Is Not
The distinction between Jivavarta and established social theory needs to be made explicit.
4.1 Jivavarta Does Not Claim to Replace Agency–Structure Theory
The relationship between agency and structure is not a new problem.
Giddens, Archer, and many other theorists have examined it from different theoretical positions.
Jivavarta does not claim to have discovered that individuals act within structures or that individuals can contribute to structural change.
Its claim is narrower:
It proposes a particular way of examining and communicating that relationship through narrative.
4.2 Jivavarta's Proposed Contribution Is Methodological
Jivavarta begins with stories and asks what philosophical patterns can be extracted from them.
The initial process is:
STORY → PATTERN → PRINCIPLE → CONCEPT → APPLICATION
The method then continues through observation and iterative refinement:
CONCEPT → OBSERVATION → REFINEMENT
Together, the proposed analytical pipeline is:
STORY → PATTERN → PRINCIPLE → CONCEPT → APPLICATION → OBSERVATION → REFINEMENT
An early prototype of this story-to-concept pipeline can be seen in Mehta's (2015b) parable Parables of Success: Persistence, where the narrative journey of navigating socio-economic constraints foreshadows the later formalisation of constrained and transformative agency.
4.3 Fiction Generates Hypotheses, Not Empirical Proof
Fiction is constructed.
Its characters, circumstances, conflicts, and outcomes are selected by an author.
A fictional outcome therefore cannot establish that a philosophical principle is true in the empirical world.
Its function is different.
A narrative can generate a hypothesis, make a relationship visible, or provide a controlled conceptual situation in which a pattern can be examined.
That hypothesis must then be taken beyond the story.
It can be compared with other narratives, historical cases, observation, and real-world application.
The story begins the inquiry; it does not end it.

5. The Second Tyrant
The Jivavarta concept of The Second Tyrant (Mehta, 2026) provides a simple illustration.
When a ruler is removed, the people celebrate.
Yet the institutions, concentration of power, incentives, and mechanisms of control remain.
Another ruler eventually occupies the same position.
The face of the problem has changed; the architecture has not.
The deeper observation is that changing an individual does not necessarily change the range of behaviour that the surrounding structure permits or rewards.
The question becomes:
If the actor changes but the conditions remain, how much can the outcome really change?
This establishes two primary modes of agency in Jivavarta:
Constrained agency concerns what an agent can do within existing conditions.
Transformative agency concerns what an agent or group can change about the conditions under which later action becomes possible.

6. Why Fiction Matters: The Story-to-Concept Pipeline
A story can place a character inside a constructed social environment and make the conditions of action visible.
Change the hierarchy.
Change the resources.
Change the rules.
Change the constraints.
Keep the character.
Then observe what happens.
Conditions can also be varied across different stories or hypothetical situations.
The story becomes a philosophical laboratory—not because it provides empirical proof, but because it provides a way to generate and examine philosophical hypotheses.
Consider the Jivavarta story The Girl Who Asked Why (Mehta, 2015a).
A young girl living within a rigid patriarchal structure accepts domestic training because it serves self-reliance, but refuses compulsory marriage and exclusion from scholarship by asking a simple question:
Why?
When scholars claim that women have weaker intellect because ancient hymns say so, she does not simply reject the claim.
She asks what reason supports it.
The narrative can therefore be read as a form of Socratic examination: a claim is questioned until its basis has to be made explicit.
Through the Jivavarta Lexicon, this narrative pattern becomes the concept The Girl Who Asked Why:
A question that breaks a rule when the rule has no reason.
The value of the concept is not that the story proves questioning always defeats unjust rules.
It is that the story isolates a recurring possibility:
A rule may possess authority without possessing a sufficient reason.
The concept can then be taken beyond the story and used to examine similar situations.

7. Case Study: Deconstructing the Field of Action in The Girl Who Asked Why
Applying the heuristic:
OUTCOME = CHOICE × STRUCTURE × CONSTRAINT
The purpose is not to calculate the outcome mathematically.
It is to examine how the three elements interact.
Choice
The agent chooses neither blind obedience nor blind rebellion.
She chooses critical examination.
She asks why a rule exists and whether its stated justification is sufficient.
Structure
The surrounding structure is patriarchal and restrictive.
Yet it contains a point of flexibility: scholarly debate provides a setting in which claims can be required to withstand argument rather than authority alone.
Constraint
The character faces strong social expectations, exclusion, and the risk of losing belonging by refusing an accepted role.
Her questioning becomes consequential because the structure contains a space in which reasons can be demanded.
This illustrates a central Jivavarta observation:
Agency acquires its consequences through the conditions in which it operates.
She does not destroy the surrounding system.
She creates pressure within one of its existing rules of justification.
The important question is therefore not simply:
Did she resist the rule?
It is:
What did her choice make the system capable of doing next?

8. From Acting Within the System to Changing the System
If structure and constraint shape the field within which a person can act, agency becomes especially significant when a choice produces consequences that alter that field:
SYSTEM → CHOICE → OUTCOME → SYSTEM CHANGE → NEW POSSIBILITIES
A person can introduce something into the system that changes what the system is capable of doing.
That something may be:
a new structure
a new body of knowledge
a new method
a new technology
a new capability
This is what Jivavarta calls transformative agency.
Transformative agency is the capacity of an agent or group to produce consequences that alter the structures, knowledge, capabilities, or conditions available to subsequent actors.
The definition is deliberately broad.
Transformative agency does not mean that one person controls an entire system.
It means that an action produces a difference that becomes consequential for what can happen afterward.

9. Gutenberg: Changing the Structure
Johannes Gutenberg illustrates structural transformation.
He did not invent paper, ink, or the idea of printing.
His significance lies in combining existing technologies and processes into a reproducible system capable of producing texts on a much larger scale.
The historical transformation was not the work of Gutenberg alone.
Printing depended on existing materials, technologies, markets, literacy, institutions, and later developments.
But the printing press changed the structure through which information could be reproduced and distributed.
Texts could circulate more widely.
Ideas could be reproduced more quickly.
The scale at which religious, scientific, political, and philosophical arguments could circulate changed.
The Jivavarta significance lies in the mechanism.
Gutenberg acted within an existing technological and social system, yet his work changed part of that system.
Once the structure of information transmission changed, the consequences of other people's choices changed with it.
Gutenberg illustrates agency as structural transformation.

10. Fleming: Changing What the System Knows
Alexander Fleming presents a different form of agency.
In 1928, Fleming investigated an unexpected mold contamination in a bacterial culture.
Rather than treating the anomaly simply as experimental failure, he examined it.
His observations contributed to the identification of antibacterial properties associated with penicillin and to subsequent scientific work.
The later development, clinical use, and mass production of penicillin involved many other researchers and institutions.
Its importance for Jivavarta lies elsewhere:
Something was already present in nature; the missing element was knowledge.
Fleming's observation helped expand what the scientific system understood about the biological world.
Once that knowledge entered the system, new actions became possible.
This reveals another form of transformative agency:
Sometimes a person changes a system by changing what the system knows.
The constraint is not always a wall.
Sometimes it is ignorance.
Fleming illustrates agency as epistemic transformation.

11. The Third Man Habit: Connecting Separate Problems
The concept of The Third Man Habit, developed from Mehta's earlier narrative Three Men (Mehta, 2015c), is defined as:
The habit of perceiving connections between separate obstacles, using the elements of one problem to resolve another.
The development of the Post-it Note by Spencer Silver and Art Fry illustrates this mechanism.
Problem A: An adhesive too weak for its original structural purpose.
Problem B: A bookmark that falls out of a hymnal.
Connection: Re-contextualizing the adhesive so that its removability becomes an advantage rather than a defect.
Outcome: A new application for the adhesive.
The important point is not simply that a failed experiment became a successful product.
It is the connection between two problems that had originally been treated as separate.
A problem that appears useless in one context can contain the element needed to solve another.
A person may therefore transform a system not by inventing an entirely new element, but by recognizing that an existing element can solve a different problem.

12. The Wright Brothers: Changing the Space of Action
The Wright brothers demonstrate another form of transformative agency.
For centuries, human beings had imagined flight, but desire did not eliminate gravity.
Engine limitations, aerodynamic instability, materials, and the problem of controlling an aircraft imposed severe constraints.
The problem was not simply to produce enough power.
It was to make powered flight controllable.
The Wright brothers approached flight as an engineering problem.
Beginning in 1899, they conducted a sustained programme of experimentation involving gliders, wind-tunnel work, propulsion, control, and flight testing.
Their successful powered flights demonstrated a new practical capability.
The significance was not that they abolished the physical constraints governing flight, but that they learned how to operate within them to create a new practical capability.
Human beings could now move through the air using controlled powered machines.
Later aviation developed through many other people, institutions, technologies, and systems.
The Jivavarta point is therefore not individual heroism, but the mechanism:
A constraint can remain in place while the range of action available within it changes.
The Wright brothers illustrate agency as capability transformation.

13. Three Forms of Transformative Agency
The examples reveal that transformative agency does not have a single form.
STRUCTURE → KNOWLEDGE → CAPABILITY
Gutenberg transformed structure by altering the scale and reproducibility of information distribution.
Fleming transformed knowledge by contributing to a change in what the scientific system understood.
The Wright brothers transformed capability by helping create a new practical space of action.
The Third Man Habit adds another dimension: connection. A person may transform a system not by inventing an entirely new element, but by recognizing that an existing element can solve a different problem.
Agency is therefore not simply resistance, nor is it merely compliance.
It is the capacity to introduce a consequential difference into an existing system.
That difference may be structural, epistemic, technological, institutional, or relational.

14. Beyond Resistance
“Survive, because nothing matters if you don't. Once you learn to survive, thrive. Thrive by gaining power and influence. After you thrive, strive. Strive to be the greatest.”

Jivavarta can therefore move beyond the familiar image of the individual confronting power.
The villager can resist the tyrant.
The worker can challenge the institution.
The citizen can oppose the ruler.
These are important forms of agency, but they are not the only ones.
The inventor creates.
The scientist notices.
The engineer solves.
The organiser connects.
The explorer extends the boundary of what is possible.
The important question remains:
What can this choice actually change?
The answer may be a person's immediate circumstances, an institution, a body of knowledge, a technology, or the range of actions available to everyone who follows.
Agency should therefore not be measured only by whether an individual defeats a constraint.
Sometimes the more consequential achievement is to:
Change the relationship between the constraint and what can be done with it.

15. When the Outcome Becomes a New Condition
This is where the temporal dimension of Jivavarta becomes essential.
A choice produces an outcome, but the outcome does not necessarily disappear.
It can become part of the next system:
CHOICE → OUTCOME → NEW CONDITION → NEW CHOICES
Gutenberg's printing technology changed the conditions under which later ideas could circulate.
Fleming's work contributed to changes in the knowledge available to later medical systems.
The Wright brothers' work contributed to technological possibilities available to later generations.
In each case, the question is no longer simply:
What can I do here?
It becomes:
If I act here, what might become different afterward?
And then:
Who will inherit that difference?
This is where agency becomes historical.
A choice can outlive the person who made it.
Its consequence can become infrastructure, knowledge, practice, technology, institution, or capability.
The individual disappears, but the changed conditions remain.

16. Transformation Is Not Improvement
Transformation should not automatically be understood as progress.
TRANSFORMATION ≠ IMPROVEMENT
A system can change without becoming better.
A new technology can create new forms of harm.
A political transformation can replace one form of domination with another.
A new capability can be used for construction or destruction.
Jivavarta's question is initially descriptive:
What changed?
A separate ethical question follows:
Was the change desirable?
This distinction prevents transformative agency from becoming a synonym for moral progress.
It also raises a further question:
If a person's choice changes the conditions inherited by others, what responsibility does that person have for those consequences?
The framework does not need to answer that question in order to make it visible.

17. Collective Agency
Systemic transformation does not always have a single identifiable agent.
A scientific discovery may depend on many researchers.
A technology may be developed by many people.
A political change may require a movement rather than an individual.
An institution may change through the combined actions of thousands of people.
Jivavarta therefore does not require transformative agency to be understood as individual control.
An individual can initiate a change.
A group can develop it.
An institution can adopt it.
Later generations can extend it.
The transformation may emerge from a sequence of actions rather than from one decision.
The relevant question is:
Did the action change the conditions under which later action became possible?
If it did, the action has a transformative dimension, whether the agent was an individual, a group, or a larger social process.

18. Boundary Conditions and Limitations
A useful framework should also explain where it does not work easily.
18.1 Strong Choice, Weak Outcome
A person may make a highly consequential choice in principle but encounter a structure that absorbs or suppresses it—for example, an unresourced inventor or an ignored dissident.
The choice exists, but the outcome does not become transformative.
This supports the central Jivavarta claim that choice cannot be examined independently of structure and constraint.
18.2 Weak Choice, Large Outcome
A person may make an ordinary choice whose consequences become unexpectedly large due to systemic amplification.
A large outcome does not necessarily mean that the agent possessed large transformative agency.
Therefore:
Transformative outcome should not be treated as equivalent to transformative agency.
18.3 Transformation Without Improvement
Transformation can produce undesirable consequences, generating unforeseen harms or substituting one structural problem for another.
Jivavarta must distinguish change from improvement.
The framework describes the transformation first; moral evaluation comes afterward.
18.4 No Quantitative Threshold Is Proposed
This paper does not attempt to establish a quantitative threshold for transformative agency.
The distinction is presently analytical rather than metric.
For the present paper, the central criterion is whether an action produces consequences that alter the conditions under which subsequent action becomes possible.

19. Intended and Unintended Transformation
An agent may intend one outcome while producing another:
INTENDED CHOICE → UNINTENDED OUTCOME → NEW CONDITION
The resulting condition may then influence people who had no connection with the original intention.
This is particularly important in complex systems.
The person may make a choice.
The system may amplify it.
Other actors may respond.
An outcome may emerge that nobody originally planned.
Jivavarta therefore does not equate agency with control.
To act is not to control all consequences.
Transformative agency concerns the capacity of action to become consequential within a system, not the ability to determine the entire future.

20. The Jivavarta Shift

The Jivavarta framework examines the individual inside the system, then takes the next step:
The system shapes the individual, but the individual can also become one of the forces that reshapes the system.
Structure shapes choice.
Choice can produce outcomes.
Outcomes can alter structure.
This creates a continuing system rather than a fixed one.
A person does not have to stand outside a system to change it.
This is the movement from:
CONSTRAINED AGENCY ⟶ TRANSFORMATIVE AGENCY
The movement can be expressed through three questions:
What can a person do here?Constrained agency.
What can that action change?Transformative agency.
What new possibilities exist because of that change?Systemic evolution.

21. Conclusion
Jivavarta begins with a simple observation:
People do not make choices in empty spaces.
They act within structures and constraints that shape what can actually be done.
Its first question is therefore:
What can a person actually do inside a system?
Its second question follows naturally:
What can a choice change?
The answer is neither that individuals are all-powerful nor that individuals are powerless.
A person acts within conditions, but the consequences of action can become part of the conditions that follow:
SYSTEM → CHOICE → OUTCOME → SYSTEM CHANGE → NEW POSSIBILITIES
Jivavarta uses narrative to make this movement visible.
A story can place an individual inside a particular set of conditions.
Those conditions can be examined, choices observed, outcomes traced, and recurring patterns turned into concepts.
Those concepts can then be taken beyond the story and examined through observation, history, and application.
The framework moves in two directions:
From system to person:
What can a person actually do?The problem of constrained agency.
From person back to system:
What can that choice change?The problem of transformative agency.
Jivavarta's proposed contribution is methodological: a way of moving from narrative situations to philosophical concepts, and from those concepts back to observation and application, while keeping the individual agent and the changing system in the same analytical frame.
The story generates the question.
The concept gives it a name.
Observation tests its usefulness.
Application exposes its limits.
Refinement keeps the concept alive.
And the central question becomes:
What can a person actually do here—and what can that choice make possible next?
