Stories of Jivavarta: Aspiration By Shon Mehta (Fable)

A Jivavarta story illustration: a bird trapped in a complex spiderweb gazing at an unreachable apple, depicting the fable Aspiration by Shon Mehta.

Once a bird came across a tall tree, the tallest he had ever seen. Looking up, he saw that the highest branch of the tree was laden with fruits.

He noticed a lot of birds sitting on the lower branches, squawking continuously, but none on that branch.

"What a bunch of losers! Instead of aiming high and relishing the ripe fruits, these birds are satisfied sitting on the lower branches." the bird thought to himself.

The bird soared high, aiming for that branch. But, as he ascended, he was knocked down by other branches in the way. He landed on a branch below. The branch was full off cobwebs, and as he struggled, his feet got entangled. He couldn't fly.

Other birds on the branch squawked louder. "How do you get off this branch? I am stuck here." asked the bird.

The other birds stopped squawking. There was a silence.

"What do you think we all are doing here? Do you really think we chose this branch?" Asked one of the birds.

After a moment, the birds resumed their squawking, desperately trying to free themselves of the cobwebs, and dreaming of the fruit-laden branch higher up. The new bird joined in.

Sayings of Jivavarta

"Don’t judge people in their reduced circumstances, nobody aspires to be there."

Lexicon of Jivavarta

The Tree of False Ascent — A system in which individuals mistake structural constraint for personal failure, until experience reveals that position is shaped more by access than ambition.

Reflection: What does it mean to truly “aim high”? Is it about reaching the top, or understanding the journey and helping others ascend?

Key Philosophical Concepts Represented

  1. Epistemic Humility
Judgment without knowledge is arrogance. Understanding begins when assumptions collapse.

  2. False Meritocracy
Position is mistaken for choice. Outcomes are treated as deserved despite unequal constraints.

  3. Moral Luck
Circumstance shapes fate. Individuals are judged for conditions beyond their control.

  4. Aspiration as Universal
Desire for flourishing is shared. Failure does not imply lack of ambition.

  5. Structural Constraint vs. Agency
Freedom is unevenly distributed. Will alone cannot overcome embedded barriers.

Jivavarta is a fictional land created by Shon Mehta, where epic tales of power, survival, and social upheaval unfold, as seen in her novels The Timingila and Lair of the Monster, along with many other stories and parables set in this richly imagined world.
