Jivavarta is a fictional land created by Shon Mehta, where epic tales of power, survival, and social upheaval unfold, as seen in her novels The Timingila and Lair of the Monster, along with many other stories and parables set in this richly imagined world.
This post outlines the political, geographical, and cultural landscape of Jivavarta, detailing its key kingdoms, locations, and underlying conflicts.
The Four Main Kingdoms
Trishala (City Kingdom)
A major port, it is the gateway for all trade in Jivavarta. Additionally, its architecture, trade, and military strength make it vital. Whoever controls Trishala controls Jivavarta.
Capital: Trishala
Capital and the most important city of the Jivavarta empire. It is known for the survivor spirit of its people and rose to prominence during Emperor Tasvak's reign.
Yashantika
Once the "golden kingdom," has now fallen into poverty. Blessed with fertile land, it is the agricultural center of the empire. King Jaskar Dharman's flawed leadership during the war for Trishala was pivotal to its fall.
Capital: Vanpore
A fabled rich and ancient city, mentioned in old religious hymns, now in ruins. It is surrounded by a tall wooden wall and a deep trench to protect from invasions. Known as the city of temples, it is seeped in religion and the people follow strict social hierarchy and segregation. It has also traditionally been the center of slave trade, and hosts the underground Bhuyari, which is a ghetto for criminals and shadowy businesses.
Rongcha
Mountaneous kingdom in the north. Was once a powerful kingdom led by God Kings, but lost its glory during the War for Trishala. It regained prominence under Queen Travi after the siege of Igati during the Lasati Invasion.
Capital: Igati
Located on the highest mountain in the Sahiya range. Known for the Rongcha Palace, which towers over Igati, reaching out to the heavens above. People are hardworking, and known for their resilience during the long siege of Igati by the Lasatis.
Adrika
A land full of natural beauty and deception. Apparently invincible, its people believe the ancient magic of the Chitrantak stone protects them from all harm.
Capital: Sonira
The most prosperous city of Jivavarta. Known for its natural beauty and the famed golden palace.
Other Key Locations and Regions
Khara Marshlands
Home to the tribal settlement of Vidari. Covered by shallow pools and tall grass, these marshlands bred a variety of exotic wildlife, both on the land and in the water, which are harvested by the Vidari tribals for animal hide, pearls, and other goods. Also infamous for marriages by abduction -- travelers who wander too deep into Khara sometimes vanish, only to reappear months later with a wife and child.
Vakshi
A monastery city situated deep within the Vakshi forest. It is home to monks and sages of all prominent faiths in Jivavarta. Its timeless beauty and scholarly air make it a central hub for learning.
Jarodha Islands
A cluster of tribal islands removed from the Jivavarta mainland. They have constantly sought freedom from Jivavarta's imperial power. No matter how peaceful the world is, Jarodha is always at war.
Mihika Nagari
A small, autonomous island city always shrouded by mist. It is inhabited by nocturnal people and is famous for its highly sought-after product, the Mihika weed.
Wars and Conflicts
The War for Trishala: A devastating internal war that shaped the current political landscape.
Lasati Invasion: A significant external threat that caused social collapse and shifted the power dynamics.
Jarodha Freedom Struggle: An ongoing conflict between mainland imperial powers and the freedom-seeking island tribes.
Main Religions
Tapasi: The old religion, traditionally favored by the rich class and the established hierarchy.
Ajabuhi: The new religion, gaining momentum and favored by the lower class. This schism is a major source of civil strife
